It is important to understand that violins are very expensive instruments and oftentimes can be unaffordable to many people. Additionally, paying for violin lessons can be challenging for many. Centuries of pushing the curriculum of only Western composers have kept marginalized groups excluded from elite schools and orchestras, which is now gradually changing with many recent attempts to diversify classical music, including such practices as repertoire selection and performance opportunities. My Boston-based Violin Institute program will mostly support economically disadvantaged or marginalized students. It will also empower them to broaden their perspective on the potential and positive power of music education and how it can open doors to a better future where more people are included and given opportunities in arts-specific workforces and performance platforms.
In Latvia, students will be empowered to believe in themselves and excel
academically and artistically while nurturing their unique voices, personalities, critical and independent thinking, and confidence. I will link educational aspects to reading and learning new material that could open new perspectives and future educational and employment opportunities. In Tukums, participants will learn how to maximize the resources that are available in the community and how to create more interaction with local audiences and new employment opportunities in the region.
The Latvian program will include seasonal lessons with me as well as with a local
teacher throughout the year, Zoom lessons, community concerts, open mics, and instrument petting zoos.
